When Faire on the Square organizer Michael Donham said
the annual event gets “bigger and better” every year, he means it.

The ninth annual Faire in Watertown will host more vendors than ever, not to mention a new installment of environmentally friendly information. The event, slated for Saturday, Sept. 29, draws more than 10,000 people.

“There will be a fair within the Faire,” said Donlan, about this year’s
“Green on the Square” component at Saltonstall Park.

According to Watertown Environment and Energy Efficiency Committee Chairperson Lisa Alexander,
tables will be set up for Faire-goers to check out how easy it is to “go green.”

“We thought that it was time for all different people in Watertown, who have an interest in sustainable living, conserving energy, using solar power for their house and who are concerned with pesticides, to get together and talk to each other,” she said. “People don’t know where to go [for that information].”

Among the 20 or so environmental vendors will be energy-saving light bulbs,
healthy cleaning products and Lexus hybrid cars.

“It’s a real mix,” Alexander said. “[Being ‘green’] is registering with people in a different way now.”

Donham said there are 280 tables and booths for Faire participators this year,
close to 20 percent more than last year.

“It’s incredible,” he said. “This year we squeezed in even more. It’s a good thing for now,
but it predicts some decisions to make in the future.”

The Faire’s budget is $40,000. Carole Katz, publicity chairperson for the Faire,
said all they are waiting for now is good weather and a good crowd.

“It usually ends up to be quite a nice day,” she said. “We try to have things for all ages.”

Loyal Faire-goers can expect to see some of the same fun — tons of rides (pirate ship, Ferris wheel, moon walk), Touch-a-Truck, a climbing wall, pony rides, arts and crafts, and the famous apple pie baking contest,
not to mention the music.

After six months of serious planning this year, Donham said he could only foresee the Faire
to become even larger event for years to come.

“I hope it becomes a much bigger event in the future,” he said.
